Upon entering the VPAC, I was immediately drawn to the Christmas decorations. The room’s entire mood had been transformed into something completely different from what I’m used to. It was like stepping into a winter wonderland. I found my seat and stared down at the program in my lap. The cursive writing on the page only added to the enchanting atmosphere.
A few minutes later, the lights dimmed, and the audience fell silent, signaling the start of the production. As the group began to perform, I was immediately taken aback by their beautiful, harmonious voices paired with entertaining choreography.
My favorite song was “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” The choreography was hilarious, and the fake disgust on the singers’ faces made it even better. Even their speaking lines were full of emotion and enthusiasm.
The overall theme of the concert was childhood Christmas. Many of the songs helped reflect the idea that Christmas time is even more magical in youth. Unlike most choir directors who stick to a strict theme from the beginning, Cierra Fountain, the choir’s director, told us about her unique process for choosing the themes of her concerts.
“So, here’s the funny thing: when I pick the songs, there’s no theme in my mind. I just pick what sounds good, and then the theme comes after!” Fountain said.
Once Fountain had selected the songs, it was time for the students to begin learning their performances. In early October, they began practicing pitch in class.
As for the choreography, the students developed much of it themselves. Fountain revealed that she often sends the students to a practice room where they can formulate routines and bounce ideas off each other.
The group also had the pleasure of working with a choir alum. “Last year we had a student who was a phenomenal choreographer and this year she did some of the choreography,” Fountain said.
Gracie Dalferes (11), president of the choir club, is overjoyed that she gets to be a part of such a talented group of people. The work they put into each performance fills her with pride.
“I always feel proud of the people who show up to the concert… because we really are one big choir family, so it’s really nice to see that everyone participates and gets to enjoy it together,” Dalferes said.
Both Dalferes and Fountain were thrilled by the group’s performance. The talent found in this department is like none other, and we can’t wait for future shows!
