The new movie Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 Wicked novel, has exploded in the media, gaining attention on platforms like TikTok from viewers and even earning recognition at the Golden Globes. Starring famous pop artist Ariana Grande, Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey, and up-and-coming musical actress Cynthia Erivo, the film was packed with talented performers.
The movie tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West from the classic movie Wizard of Oz. Before she was the Wicked Witch, Elphaba was a misfit and even the center of some bullying at school due to her green skin. However, her world changes when she meets Galinda (who later becomes Glinda the Good Witch), and the two form an unusual friendship. Throughout the movie, Elphaba and Galinda’s relationship is tested as they overcome challenges, eventually pulling them apart.
Personally, I loved this movie, especially the visuals and vocals! Every scene has stunning designs, which help contribute to the overall mystical vibe of the movie. I couldn’t take my eyes off the design of Emerald City! The costume designs were also stunning. I especially loved the extravagance of the costumes in the emerald city scenes with their flowing dresses and feathered hats. Of course, the movie has received the most praise for its music, and rightfully so.
Galinda’s song “Popular” is one of the top trending audios on TikTok right now and seems to be the fan favorite, but my personal favorite was Prince Fiyero’s song “Dancing Through Life.” It fit perfectly with his character, displaying his wildly manipulative nature and charm. The songs were well-written and helped contribute to the character’s personalities. With each song, I felt like I was being pulled into the movie, like I was physically there, going to Shiz University and dancing beside the characters. The music was so well written that I felt completely immersed in the magic.
