The Havoc House hosted another thrilling basketball game on January 15 where the Broncos claimed victory against a strong Madison Prep Chargers team. With both sides of the gym filled to the brim with students, spectators, and family, everybody in the Havoc House got their money’s worth for the night.
The game kicked off with equal play from both sides, but Madison Prep set the tone early, scoring 19 points in the first quarter, and matching the Broncos with each play. The Broncos continued to impress early on, but couldn’t find the switch they needed, the spark to get the offense going in the first quarter.
Scoring 17 points in the second quarter, however, the Broncos were a little more optimistic going into the locker room, despite still being down by score.
When the Broncos returned from the break, it was like a switch had been flipped on inside of them. Suddenly, the game flipped. The Broncos held the Chargers to a combined 20 points in the second half, and the offense put up 36 points to seal the deal the night. This comeback against a top 10 team in Division II was led by the Broncos core players: Xavier Ferguson (12), Kristion Brooks (11), and Rashead Smith (12) who all put up big numbers that night.
Ferguson’s monster slam dunk was the Broncos final farewell to the Chargers, which iced the game out.
When asked about the team’s performance, head coach and two-time state champion Jonathan McClinton said he was proud of the team and the way they approached the game.
“The boys showed poise and control. We are trying to play our best basketball right now,” said McClinton.
The Broncos now sit number 1 in the LHSAA power rankings for basketball in Division I as they go into district play.
