On September 3, the ZHS Lady Broncos volleyball team went head-to-head with Southern University Lab. The team fought long and hard, each of their movements perfectly calculated to have a perfect game. The teams spirit shined as they played, each win being celebrated by hugs and dancing. Overall, the game ended in the Lady Broncos securing three wins and one loss. During every set, a cheer section full of passionate fans could be heard the entire time. At the end of the game the group ran a lap around the gym, screaming and slamming their belts to the ground. Each picture captures the players showing off their powerful legs, perfect form, and willingness to win.
Coach Perry, the head volleyball coach herself has shared some of her opinions on the upcoming season. With plenty of new opportunities opening themselves for the growing volleyball team, there are plenty of new goals to be reached. Whether that includes personal growth or growth as a team, Perry shares the team’s biggest goal for the season ahead to strive on the statewide level and compete with some of the biggest schools in the area. Perry wants her players, “to play for the team and not for self, and most importantly make it to playoffs.”
This year plenty of freshmen joined the volleyball team as well, making the team bigger than before. All the new faces have so much unique powerful talent to bring. Luckily, last spring Perry was able to see the girls who would possibly joining the high school team face to face. The familiarity no doubt made it easier for some of the girls who chose to keep going with volleyball to transition into high school. Over the summer these middle schoolers trained with the high school team doing workouts with weights, conditioning, summer games, summer practices, and summer camps.
“Last spring season I was fortunate enough to join the middle school staff.” said Perry. “This allowed me to train girls who would possibly make the high school team.”
At the end of the day, our volleyball coaches try their best to grow these girls into elite athletes. Though training can be draining and seem to drag on, but these coaches put their all into coaching just as their students put their all into getting better.
When talking about her favorite thing to do while being a coach, Coach Perry reflects on her own time as an athlete when she says, “Being able to give back to my community and pour into my players as my coaches growing up poured into me,” said Perry.
