As an athlete, there are few things that compare to the exhilaration and pressure of playing in a championship game. The stakes are high, the competition is fierce, and the entire season comes down to one final showdown. Going into the championship game, the team couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. After all, some players had only played in a few games before that felt as big as this one.
“Some feelings I had were nervousness, the feeling of being ready to play, and just wanting to play good for my team,” Sarhya Smith (10) said.
But as Lady Broncos took to th
e court, ready to defend their title, multiple players knew that they had to put their nerves aside and give it their all. They were determined to do whatever it took to help the team secure another championship win. And as the game progressed, that determination grew stronger.
With just a few seconds left on the clock, the team was facing a losing streak, but then, something incredible happened. They broke the losing streak and scored the winning points, securing our team’s victory. It was clear that hard work and dedication had paid off, and that the team could rise to the challenge when it mattered

most.
“It was a great feeling because we knew they were a very competitive team, and they were going to bring energy, effort and heart,” Ayja Walker (11) said.
One of the reasons for success was their strong defense. Time and time again, their defense made crucial stops, ensuring that our team stayed in the lead. Knowing that they had such a solid defense behind us gave them even more confidence in the court. It was a true testament to the dedication and skill of the entire team.
But as the team celebrated their championship win, they couldn’t help but think about the future. As the senior guard Ava Raymond will be leaving, leaving the team means that they will have to work even harder next season to maintain their winning streak.

“Since our senior guard Ava Raymond is leaving and our team is still young, I think one thing we need to work on is being more aggressive and getting stronger throughout the year,” Marcia Robinson (9) said.
Areas that multiple players have identified for improvement are communication and defense. This will be a key focus for the team as they prepare for the next upcoming season.
Amidst all the pressure and hard work, the team also had a pregame ritual that helped us get pumped up before each home game. they would gather in the locker room and jump as high as they could, hitting a poster with a bold “Z” on it. This ritual not only brought the players together as a team, but it also helped the players mentally prepare for the game ahead. It was a reminder of why they were there and what they were fighting for.
As the championship game came to an end, the team couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. Not only did they have the chance to win a championship, but they also had the opportunity to bring back-to-back titles to our school, Zachary. It was a truly unforgettable experience and one that the team will always treasure.
“I felt good knowing I had the chance to win a championship my freshman year and help bring back-to-back titles to Zachary,” Robinson (9) said.
Playing in a championship game is determination, and teamwork. But most of all, it requires a strong mindset and the ability to rise to the occasion when it counts. As the lady Broncos looks to the future, they are confident that they will continue to grow and improve, always striving for greatness and another shot at a championship win.
