Starting With the West
Last year, the 1st seed Oklahoma City Thunder won the finals against the 4th seed Indiana Pacers in a thrilling 7-game series with Pacers

star Tyrese Haliburton suffering a significant Achilles injury in Game 7 leading to the Thunders win. This year the Thunder have maintained their 1st seed spot in the West, recording a total of 64 wins and 18 losses. The young team has shown that they’re good enough to go back-to-back with star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who was league MVP, Western Conference MVP, and Finals MVP last season still displaying MVP character in his game. They also have advantages that can make the playoffs better for them. Having a full roster with Jalen Williams back from a knee injury gives OKC maximum player availability which allows them to keep their team rhythm and be able to rotate players more freely, not having to think about injuries. With Chet Holgren having a great season being a first time all-star, his elite defense is crucial in the team’s attempt to succeed again this year. Many believe that OKC could be back-to-back champions this season while some predict that another team in the west could potentially be better and snatch the Thunders ticket to the finals for themselves.
The San Antonio Spurs led by Victor Wembanyama have clinched the 2nd seed in this year’s playoffs. Like the Thunder, the Spurs are a relatively young team but still are one of the best dominating teams in the league. 62 wins and 20 losses are proof that they know how to dominate. Nicknamed the alien, Wemby is one of the few in today’s game that has elite defense and excellent ball handle for someone who’s standing 7’4. The Spurs have faced the Thunder many times and

have won 4 of their last 5 meetings, being one of the few teams to beat them multiple times. Though the team is one of the best, key contributors to the team such as Keldon Johnson, starter Stephon Castle, Rookie Dylan Harper, Julian Champagnie and Rookie Carter Bryant have never played in a playoff game before. This is exciting for them, but it can also come with nerves from the pressure-high games that determine if your season will continue or end. The Spurs have shown that they have the potential and players to be able to win the chip and are ready to do what it takes to win.

Standing third in the West, the Denver Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic, won the NBA finals back in 2023 defeating the Miami Heat in a 5-game series where the Nuggets led 4-1 in the series. Star and three-time MVP, Jokic is known for his elite passing abilities which is not common for centers his size. His versatile scoring from being able to drown a deep three and cut through defenders to get to the rim for a nasty dunk is what makes his role on the team effective during the game. Vital players like Jamal Murray and his three-point shooting as well as his superior performances under pressure add a lot to the pot of the Nuggets success this year. With this, the Nuggets have what they need to take on Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs and come out with a win.
On to the East
Having secured the first seed since the 2006-2007 NBA season, the Detroit Pistions produced 60 wins and 22 losses. Averaging 23.9 points and 9.9 assists per game, Cunningham has upped his playmaking ability and scoring efficiency this season as the leader of the team. Increasing his physical strength, he is able to guard bigger players on defense and be more efficient at the rim. Averaging about 10 rebounds per game, Jalen Duren has also enhanced his game as he is effective on offense with high shooting percentages. Utilizing his length being 6’10 and his agility, he has an immense defensive upside, protecting the rim to defend. Other players like Ausar Thompson and Tobias Harris have been effective with the team helping them secure the first seed this season as well. Being the first seed, they are expected to get far in the bracket, and they have pled out their case all year as why they are the first seed and why they have potential to go to the Finals.
Proving others wrong this year, the Boston Celtics have secured the second seed in the East during their “Gap Year” as franchise star Jayson Tatum had been recovering from an achilles injury from last year’s conference semi-finals series loss to the New York Knicks. Returning after just 10 months of rehab, on March 6th against the Dallas Mavericks, Tatum has averaged 21.8 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Coming back after under a year from an Achilles is considered a fast recovery, with others such as Tyrese Haliburton and Damian Lillard still taking time off to recover from their achilles injuries. Taking the lead, guard Jaylen Brown has led the team during Tatum’s absence. Having what some would say is the best year of his career; Brown is averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assist per game. Having sorted out a new team, players such as Baylor Sheirman, Luka Garza and Neemis Queta have come out of the shadows, getting more playing time while also being affective. The character and leadership from Brown are also big reasons that they have had good success this season.
From the Big Apple, the New York Knicks are in the 3rd seed for the East this playoff season. Led by Jalen Brunson, the team has good potential in winning this year. Last year, the Knicks were close in getting the ticket to the finals, making it all the way to the conference finals, but lost to the Pacers in a 6-game series 4-2. The lefty from New Jersey, Jalen Brunson has the athleticism and proficient feet work that makes him an elite player and a leader for the Knicks. Brunson’s clutch shooting has been effective in the teams’ comebacks from pretty big deficits this season. Center Karl Anthony- Towns contributes to his great rebounding and defensive play, such as blocking the team. Being superior on defense while still being productive on offense, averaging about 20 points per game has put him in the position to be a second leader to the team. Notable players such as OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges are also very effective in teams’ success this year having good team chemistry. Overall, this team has all the pieces to the puzzle to get to the NBA Finals and win the championship.
These are the top three seeds in each conference but seen last year lower seeds like the 4th seed Pacers have made it to the finals in the past. Teams like the Cavaliers, Raptors, Lakers, and Rockets sitting at the 4th and 5th seeds are not big contenders but still can have an effective role in the playoffs. The playoffs are sometimes unexpected with teams projected to lose in the first rounds making it far into the bracket beating out higher seeds. This year’s playoffs shouldn’t be any different, with big stars coming out to play their best to win the chip for their city and franchise.
